What is the Maryland Piedmont Reliability Project

The 70-mile power line project involves constructing a high-voltage, 500,000-volt transmission line that will stretch from Norrisville in Harford County to the Doubs substation in southern Frederick County. This project will disrupt communities across Maryland and deliver the electricity produced to Virginia. Maryland does not benefit from this project.

This project has substantial implications for local communities and the environment. It will cut through multiple counties—Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Frederick — impacting private lands, farms, homes, and natural landscapes. The construction process will disrupt daily life through noise, construction traffic, and potential land acquisition. The very character of Maryland communities will be changed because of this project.

For residents, this project will reduce property values and cause disruption to their homes and communities. Farmland will be lost or rendered less usable, affecting local agriculture. Additionally, the natural beauty and wildlife habitats will be significantly disrupted, impacting local ecosystems.

Community members are rightly concerned about the long-term effects on their quality of life. We must mobilize to raise awareness, influence the Maryland Public Service Commission, protect our environment and private property rights. This is our fight and we must be involved.

How Does it Effect You?

The 70-mile power line project will directly impact homeowners by disrupting their living environment in several ways:

  1. Property Value Decline: Homes situated near the power line route will experience a drop in property values due to the visual impact and potential health concerns associated with high-voltage lines.

  2. Land Use Restrictions: Homeowners will face restrictions on how they can use their land. Portions of their property may be acquired or restricted, limiting their ability to use or enjoy their space as they wish. PSEG's threat of eminent domain is real.

  3. Construction Disruptions: The construction process will bring increased noise, dust, and traffic. This can be particularly intrusive and disrupt daily routines, from quiet enjoyment of the home to sleep disturbances.

  4. Visual Impact: The installation of large transmission towers and lines will alter the landscape, will affect the aesthetic appeal of properties and the surrounding natural environment.

  5. Safety and Health Concerns: There are legitimate worries about the potential health effects of living close to high-voltage power lines, contributing to stress and uncertainty about long-term well-being.

  6. Productive Farmland Will be Affected: Many of the areas affected contain some of the most productive farmland in Maryland. This project will totally destroy a way of life and livelihoods for many Marylanders
